Belkin Powerline AV+ Starter Kit
HomePlug Network Adapters
Link: Belkin
The Starter Kit consists of 2 Network Adapters. Plug the first adapter (which has only 1 ethernet port) into a wall outlet and connect it to your router. Plug the other adapter (which has 3 ethernet ports) into a wall outlet and connect up your computer or other devices into any of the 3 available ethernet ports. Your internet connection can then be accessed on such computer or devices (such as AV equipment or game console).
Data transfer is encrypted using 128-bit AES. The rated data transfer speed is 200 Mbps, useful for areas of your house which are difficult to reach by WiFi or ethernet cables. The transfer rate is claimed to be good enough for "HD Movies".
There is another, cheaper, model called the Powerline AV Starter Kit (without the + sign). Same specs but both adapters have only 1 ethernet port.
Match Game Moments
Last Saturday Dick appeared live on Stickam for his Match Game Moments.
An Oasis of Laughter and Silliness
Aaron B has been a fan since the early 1720's when Dick and Leo used to bellow at each other about the latest innovation in quills. Life is a rollercoaster but through thick and thin Dick and Leo have provided him with an oasis of laughter (and silliness, adds Leo). He saw the R2D2 Soy Sauce Bottle on the Star Wars Shop and felt compelled to share it with Dick and Leo. It's also available on Amazon. The soy sauce pours through the Holo Projector.
A Sea Captain
Dick was once told by a psychic, who detected the salt spray in Dick's beard, that he had been a sea captain in a previous life.
Christmas Schedule
Leo is off to France for Christmas, but they will be pre-recording some shows which should cover much of Christmas.

iPod Accessory - Wireless Streaming
Link: Monster Cable
Connect the base station to AC power and to your home stereo and to one of the audio inputs of your home stereo (via the mini-jack to RCA cable provided). Plug the transmitter into the iPod (which draws minimal power from the iPod), start playing and the music will be streamed by 2.4GHz wireless technology (with a bandwidth of 4 Mega-bits per second) to the base station receiver. The iPod doubles up as a remote control.
Mad Currency
Randal Schwartz, Perl expert, co-host of FLOSS and long-time fan of DGW, came across an entry on Wikipedia about fake denominations of US currency and found that the Mad currency (3-dollar bill) which Dick talked about in the past (see, e.g. Episode 121) has made its way into that entry. Dick goes on to describe the Alfred E Neuman postage stamps that Mad used to make.
Spork Cartoon
Dick and Leo mention in passing a spork cartoon which listeners have written in about. Leo says he is going to save it for the Letters Section, but naturally he forgets. While we wait for Dick and Leo's memory to come round, here's one which is pretty good, by Jakin J Waldock.

A gadget for the couch potato who is also a PC fan. The diNovo Mini is a palm size keyboard, from Logitech, bluetooth 2.0-enabled, with rechargeable Lithium ion battery with AC adapter. It's for those who use their TV as their computer monitor. It has 2 modes. One is for control of Windows Media Centre. The other mode is for control of PC functions, so you can do IM, emails etc. Compatible wtih PS3 too.
1000 Episodes
Avid listener FreeBSD loves DGW, congratulates Dick and Leo on the successful podcast, and hopes it goes on to 1000 episodes. He also has a story to tell which would go well with the Scala Rider Teamset episode (Episode 369), about teenagers text messaging while driving. He was sitting in Starbucks in Kingston, Ontario, when he heard a crash outside - a lady driver was text messaging while driving and rear-ended the car in front as she turned into the road outside Starbucks.
Episode 500
Dick and Leo are pretty tied up and Dick has not planned anything for Episode 500. Leo suggests that listeners can send in questions to them, and if they answer correctly, listeners can send them crap.

Apple TV
B W Whitmeyer wants to know if Dick has tried the Apple TV and what contents can be streamed to the TV. Leo says the Apple TV has been delayed, and it's supposed to stream media playable by iTunes. Leo will review it on a furture TTTT.
Kick-Off !
Computer System Monitoring and Recovery Device
Link: Sophisticated Circuits
It isn't very clear what gadget exactly Leo is doing today. The only thing we can be sure about is that Leo found it under his desk. Leo seems to be talking about the PowerKey Pro (a power strip) first, but then he moves on to the Kick-off ! - which is a small USB device that monitors a system (which needs to be 24/7 such as a server) and automatically restarts it when it crashes. Kick-off! provides application crash detection, logging and preventative restarting capabilities.
Slim-Line Leo
Leo is on a special no-caffeine diet which succeeded in losing 6 pounds for him in a week.
Hayes SmartModem
Listener Wex worked for Hayes Tech Suport in its dying days. Dennis Hayes was a classic geek who invented the SmartModem (Episode 245) but a bad businessman who could not realise one could not go on selling modems for hundreds of dollars. A model called the MobiModem sold for $1,200.

Dick's TTTT Dilemma
Dick gets requests to slam Leo on TTTT, and gets slammed for doing it. He's got scolded many times for mocking the spork (Episode 182).
MicroTrack
John from West Covina, California notes that the 300th Episode will fall on Friday the 13th, April 2007. So buckle down with the Hurriquake (Episode 193). He recommends a DVR that records to compact flash - M-Audio's MicroTrack.

One
of Dick's favourite CES gadgets was an internet-enabled
Refrigerator/Microwave oven which chills your dinner until you surf to
it from the office to tell it to defrost and then cook your dinner. LG did anounce in CES 2001 an internet-enabled microwave which can download recipes and cooking times, but it doesn't seem to be in production. Read article.
