Olympus E-P1
Micro Four-Thirds Digital Camera
Link: Olympus America
The E-P1 has 12.3 MP (effective), ISO up to 6400, takes 720p video at 30fps in AVI motion jpegs, and comes with one of two lens kits (crop factor 2): either a 14-42mm lens (f-stop 3.5-5.6) or a 17mm pancake fixed lens (f-stop 2.8). It also offers lens adapters for Four Thirds lenses and old Olympus OM lenses. Unfortunately it doesn't have a viewfinder or built-in flash, although you can get them as hot-shoe accessories.
Leo has taken some pictures and videos on the Wine Train using the E-P1, which he will post to Smugmug in the fullness of time. Meanwhile, you can check out another set of photos taken by Leo on his E-P1 on Smugmug.
TWiT Cottage Air-Conditioner
Leo is very proud of the air-conditioner he bought for the TWiT Cottage, with the help of Colleen and Mini Split Systems. It's a Sanyo split-system, complete with temperature and flap control, Quiet Mode and Turbo Mode, and 17,000 BTU.

More Candidates for the Home Office
Suggestions for the TWiT Home Office's location keep coming in live from the chatroom - Mud Lick in Kentucky, Bald Knob in Arkansas, Batt's Arm in Newfoundland, Toad Suck in Arkansas, Hookersville in West Virginia, Skullbone in Tennessee, Come By Chance in Newfoundland, Two Egg in Florida, and Punkeydoodles Corner, Ontario. Leo is sticking with Cheesequake, New Jersey for the time being.
For other suggestions, see Answer Giz Wiz Questions, where Newfoundland has had the lion's share of funny names. Way back in Episode 164, a listener has written in about some of them. You can listen to it again on twit.tv.
The Question To The Answer
Dick and Leo do a Carnac the Magnificent session (a segment on the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson). Prescient answer: Sis Boom Bah. Question: Dick and Leo can't remember, but it's something to do with an exploding sheep. Prescient answer: Butterfield ate 8000. Question: How many hamburgers did Butterfield eat. Here's a good example of Carnac's routine.
Another Qualification on Dick's Resumé
When Johnny Carson took his leave in the summer, the Tonight Show used rotating hosts, each taking a week. One of them was Gene Rayburn, who once brought Dick on to the team of writers. Dick even appeared on the show as representative of the National Safety Council, which is still on a kinescope recording somewhere. Dick has also written for the American version of That Was The Week That Was (TW3).
Mr Podcast
As Milton Berle was called Mr Television, so Leo should be called Mr Podcast, says Dick. Leo is not sure about that title, and Dick has asked what should Leo be called, on Answer Giz Wiz Questions. Check out the answers there.
Titanic - A New Musical
Zud from the chatroom suggests to Leo the musical version of the Titanic on Audible. While Zud may have been pulling Leo's leg, there was a broadway show called "Titanic - A New Musical", and you can find the original cast recording on CD.
Morbid Subjects for Cruise Lectures
Dick has been on the QE2 as a guest giving lectures and talks (see Episode 225). He found out that apparently one of the more popular subjects for lectures is sunken ships, like the Titanic and the Carpathia.
Giz Wiz Lessons Learnt
Ken Ronkovitz from New Jersey had to resubscribe to shows on his iTunes, and rather than subscribing to individual shows, he decided to subscribe to Radio Leo. Lesson 1: Leo has a lot of podcasts. Ken was falling behind with the Daily Giz Wiz and was going to delete some unlistened-to DGW shows, one of which was Episode 750, the Panasonic Travelvision, until a voice told him not to, as he had actually owned the Travelvision. He listened to the show, and to his pleasant surprise heard his previous letter being read by Dick. Lesson 2: Never delete a Daily Giz Wiz episode.
Allen v American Apparel Inc
Woody Allen sued American Apparel for using an image of him as a Hasidic Jew from Annie Hall, with the caption "the high rabbi", on advertising billboards. On 18 May 2009, the case was settled for $5 million. Read the Reuters article. For a picture of the billboard, see the Jewish Journal.

Happy Birthday on the Manhattan
Dick celebrated his birthday on 19 October on the Luxury Yacht Manhattan on the Classic Habor Line with his friends.
Steve Miller writes again, this time about the upcoming Mad auction at Heritage Comics Auction, the subject of an article on MSN. It will be held tomorrow, and the artwork for the original covers (including Alfred E Neuman's first cover, by Norman Mingo in 1956) will be auctioned off.
Dick's favourite Mad issue was the one with a spoof of Poseidon Adventure on its cover, also Mad's best selling issue ever (see Episode 282). The original artwork was auctioned off, and Dick did not bid, thinking it was beyond his means. Annie Gaines bought it and it is now on loan to Dick for life.
Testamentary Wishes
Dick may not realise this, but he is fairly consistent with his "testamentary wishes". See Episode 235 (Sea Urn) for Dick's previous hilarious expression of his testamentary wishes, and Episode 135. He wants a death theme for himself.

T-Mobile G1
Smartphone
Link: T-Mobile G1
It has bluetooth, wifi, GPS (though not turn-by-turn), 512 MB built-in memory, although it has an microSD card slot and comes with a 1GB card; a back-lit qwerty keyboard (which is revealed by sliding out the screen) and a replaceable battery; a 3.2MP camera, but like the iPhone, it does not shoot video, and like the iPhone it does not support Flash on the internet. Unlike the iPhone, it supports voice dialling and "cut and paste".
Physically, it weighs just under 6 ounces. At the bottom is a panel of buttons: a big Menu button, underneath which at the centre is a trackball (for navigation and as a select button). To the left of the trackball are the "Call/Send" button and the "Home" button; to the right of the trackball are the "Back" and "Hangup/Power" buttons.
On the left hand side of the phone is a Volume toggle, and on the right hand side the camera button. For the earphones, unfortunately it's a microUSB connection and you'll need an adapter for your 3.5mm jack earphones.
The display is 3.2 inches at 480 x 320 resolution, with a capacitive touch-screen. It does not support multi-touch, but does support long presses (through which you get a context menu including "cut and paste"). It has an accelerometer and is supposed to adjust itself to Portrait/Landscape mode, at least when the qwerty keyboard is open.
Since Android is open-source, many applications are expected to come out supporting the platform, and will not be filtered as in the case of the iPhone. You can access the apps from the Android "Market", and Google will tell you in relation to each app what types of access the app may have on the phone - such as communications, your location and your personal information.
The phone comes with the standard Google apps, such as Gmail, Contacts, Calendar, and like the iPhone, offers a mobile version of YouTube. If you don't use Gmail, there is another mail application. Unfortunately, this other mail app cannot open attachments (which Gmail can by HTML conversion), nor save them. The IM app supports major instant messengers such as AIM, Windows Live, Yahoo and of course Google Talk. Like Google's desktop browser the Chrome, the Android browser is WebKit-based. Another app that comes with the phone is AmazonMP3, with access to Amazon's DRM-free mp3 downloads - which only works with Wifi, and not 3G or Edge. The phone also has its own music player software.
At the moment, the phone is available in T-Mobile stores only in cities which has T-Mobile's 3G coverage.
Favourite Episodes
In Episode 679, Dick and Leo were asked if they had a list of their 20 favourite/funniest episodes. Ludwik Trammer of gizwizsearch can answer for them. Search queries on his site show which episodes are most frequently accessed - 182 Titanium Spork, 465 Electron Echo Piano, 462 MP4 Watch, and of course 282 Toothpick Bird.
Ludwik also tells us that the accumulative length of all the DGW shows now exceeds 7 days.
One More Thing
Ludwik is going to introduce a new feature on his site. In fact it is already operational. Just go to his site and see if you can spot the difference. Otherwise, just wait for an announcement through Dick and Leo in tomorrow's recording session, or in next week's episodes.
Video Podcasts To Wait
The last time Leo talked about video podcasts (with hopes of getting DGW on video) was Episode 671. Unfortunately, with the economic downturn, Leo has decided to be a little more prudent, and maybe putting that on hold, although he may still put out a weekly "best of" video podcast.
Second Longest Episode
At 31:03, today's show is the second longest episode, just 12 seconds short of Episode 634, the Lexmark X9575 Professional.

Eye Fi Explore
Wireless SD Card with Geotagging
Link: Eye-Fi
The makers of the Eye-Fi Wirelss SD Card (Episode 441) have updated their product. Apart from bumping up the capacity to 2GB (with the same wireless connectivity and uploading capability), the new Eye-Fi Explore adds geotagging to your photos by noting the locations of the wifi hotspots or networks which have been mapped by Skyhook Wireless using its Wifi Positioning System that currently covers 70% of the population in North America, the top 50 metropolitan areas in Europe (and 70% of the population in the UK, France and Germany) and is seeking to expand its coverage into Asia. Skyhook is the same company used by the iPhone Edge (which does not have built-in GPS) for its location-awareness feature.
In addition to the Skyhook geotagging service, it also comes with one year's free Wayport Hotspot access, which has over 10,000 hotspots in the US, renewable for $19 a year.
Its webshare feature now includes many popular photo sharing and printing sites, social networking sites and blogging sites, such as Flickr, SmugMug, Picassa, PhotoBucket, FaceBook, Vox, TypePad and even Wal-Mart.
The Spork Makes it to the Big Screen
Neil Chitel reports that the Spork has made it to Hollywood, in the latest Disney Pixar film Wall-E. Leo suspects the Toothpick Bird will appear in the sequel.
TWiT Cottage Slogan
The slogan around the TWiT Cottage is "Feeling down, feeling depressed? Get the hell out of my sight." No State or Federal Labour Law applies in the Duchy of TWiTdom. The future looks grim for Dane and Colleen.

IBM 1130
The Honeywell H316 Pedestal Kitchen Computer (Episode 515) prompted a listener (whose name Dick forgets to mention) to write in. Back in 1970, he had a 5-year lease on an IBM 1130 with a card reader, printer and cartridge and tech support, for $2,000. That's $2,000 a month. For more on its history, visit IBM's archives.

Holiday Arrangement
Leo thinks they are going to have a week of "Best of DGW", then a week of holiday, and they'll come back in the New Year after Dick has been to CES.
An Old Letter
A listener wrote in some time ago (after Episode 379, the CardioChek), making the observation that there was Leo on his live video feed, sitting in front of the mic for 3 hours doing nothing, and then there was Dick in his apartment opening packages, putting his fingers into devices, bleeding himself and checking his cholesterol.
Leo's Live Feed
Leo is recording this batch of shows "live" on video on ustream.tv, and 196 people are watching. You can try your luck in future to get the feed on twit.tv/live.
GizWizBiz USB Smart Button
Steve Miller, of Westerville, Ohio, a bit of a gadget hound himself (see Episodes 279, 376), is one of the 17 people who bought Dick's USB Smart Button, which has freed his hard drive of the space previously necessary for Dick's web address! Although he already had a Dysan vacuum, he still bought the Roomba (mentioned in Episode 451) which is excellent for going under the bed.

Eye-Fi
WiFi-Enabled SD Card
Link: Eye-Fi
After you've taken a picture with your camera, the EyeFi card will automatically transmit the file to your computer (if it's within range), and then to the web (if you have so configured the Manger software). If the camera gets out of range of the wifi network , it will pick up the transmission where it left off when the wifi network gets into range again.
At the moment, only JPGs are supported for Wifi transmission, although the card can still store whatever file formats your camera can produce. Wifi networks which require a user log-in via an initial web browser interface are not supported.

Dick's Share in TWiT.tv
Dick has heard word that Leo is going to sell TWiT to Google for $1 trillion, and Leo has promised $1 billion of that to Dick.
Lauding Dane
Leo thanks Dane Golden for actually listening to the recordings before doing the editing. A feat which Leo never managed to achieve.
No Letters Today
Dick and Leo forget to read a letter. Even Dane, with all his editing magic, couldn't save the show this time.

iSymphony
Mini Stereo System with iPod Dock
Link: iSymphony
A mini stereo system with AM/FM radio and a CD player which plays mp3 and wma files. The iSymphony M1 has a dock for the iPod, a USB port for other USB-enabled players, and an SD card slot. The stereo can play digital music files directly from an SD card.
Audience Number
Leo says it's about 25,000 per episode, 125,000 per week, about half a million per month.
Thanks From Up North
John has just moved from Ottawa to Yellow Knife in North-West Territory, Canada, which is 62°N latitude, and his only creature comfort there is DGW, and their warm and cheesy banter, to get him through his acclimatising period. The northernmost that Leo has been to is 60°N, Helsinki and St Petersburg.
