Verizon MiFi 2200
EVDO Mobile Hotspot and Wifi Router
Link: Verizon
Leo talked about the Verizon USB720 Modem in Episode 357, and the Cradlepoint Personal Hotspot in Episode 542. The MiFi 2200 from Verizon takes mobile broadband to another level. It is a mobile hotspot using EVDO. It also doubles up as a Wifi (b/g) router, allowing up to 5 devices to share the EVDO connection. The 1150mAh Lithium Ion battery can last up to 4 hours (when using only one Wifi client). It is sold with a Mobile Broadband Service Plan. A similar device is available from Sprint.
Giz Wiz Meet-Up - A Reminder
Dick, Leo and Dane Golden will be at the San Francisco Jillian's Billiards at the Sony Metreon this evening for a meet-up with fans and friends, which will start at 6-ish. Details in Dick's post.
Wine Train - Catching Up
Dick and Leo went gourmet-dining and wine-tasting on the Napa Wine Train yesterday, along with Jennifer and Abby. As promised, Leo (with the help of his Verizon MiFi) uploaded photos and videos from the Wine Train. If you missed it yesterday, you can catch up here.
Totting up at TD Bank
While Leo's rummaging through his mailbag for a letter to read, Dick steps in to read a letter from Doug from Stanhope, New Jersey. In Episode 861, Dick talked about the surcharge imposed by banks for counting up your coins, and the better alternative of the Coinstar Machines. Doug wants to draw the listeners' attention to the TD Bank (formerly Commerce Bank) in the New York/New Jersey area, whose branches will tot up your coins for free.
A Free Ride in the Tesla
Leo finally locates the letter he was going to read. Back in Episode 661 Darrell and Marilyn Holmquist from San Jose wrote to Dick, promising to give Dick and Leo a ride in their Tesla which was due to arrive in May or June this year. Now the Tesla Roadster has arrived, and Dick and Leo can try it when Dick is in the area for the recording of Episode 900. The test run has now been slotted for today (Tuesday Pacific time), before Dick and Leo start this week's recording session.

Cradlepoint PHS300 Personal Hotspot
Networking/Travel Router for Mobile Broadband
Link: Cradlepoint
For a list of compatible devices, check here. The firmware can be upgraded.
Other models with different feature sets are also available. The CTR350 is a similar to the PHS300, except that it has no built-in Li-ion battery, but has an extra ethernet port for standard internet connection. Like the CTR350, the MBR1000 has an ethernet port for internet connection via a DSL or cable modem, an Express Card Slot for express card 3G-modems, and supports wirelss-N in addition to wirelss b/g, with 3 external antennae to broaden the range of reception. The only thing it doesn't have is a built-in battery.
And Fun For All ...
... and things that make life easier, or not. Shane Shellenbarger (of Wandering Attention) writes in about a fun site: andfunforall.blogspot.com. From the Smart Cup (with built-in cookies holder), the Penguin Tea Timer, to the Banana Guard and the Lock-Cup, you get the wackiest of gadgets on this page of andfunforall.
Alternatively, you can find the same gadgets on Cool Inventions at fwdemails.com, or Things That Make Life Easier Or Not by LiYu, or Cool Inventions/Things That Make Life Easier by AlvinPoh, or XPigs Part 1 and Part 2, with no attribution to the source. Fun for all indeed.
The Banana Guard is available here. The Penguin Timer has been covered before, in Episode 501 (and suggested by George from Ajax, Ontario, Canada). The Lock-Cup is still awaiting a manufacturer.

Meraki Mini
Wifi Router and Repeater / Mesh Networking
Link: Meraki
The main idea, though, is to create a mesh network of open access. Plug in more Meraki Minis into power sources (with a choice of US, UK, EU and AU power adapters available), and they will act as mere repeaters. The online Dashboard application allows you to manage your own network (such as making private networks, setting bandwidth limits, blocking unwanted users), and even monetise the setup by charging for access - although that would require you to get the Pro Edition (which is the same hardware as the Standard Edition, but you pay extra for the monetising option). The package includes suction cups and adhesive pads (to position the repeaters as near your windows as possible).
Pocket UV Disinfector
Leo insists on reading a letter, refers to a gadget suggested by a listener, the Pocket UV Disinfector, available from Market Gypsy, without giving him credit, then asks Dick for a letter.
Replug
Another listener Jason Anderson, after reading The Unofficial Apple Weblog, at tuaw.com, suggests the Replug for Leo when he looks down under his desk to find some crap to share. The Replug sits between the headphone port on your computer or portable device and the headphones. It bends under pressure to maintain the connection, and if too much strain is being applied, it breaks away saving your audio device.
SMC Skype Phone and FON Router
Skype Phone and Wifi Router
Link: Skype Accessories
An idea borrowed from Cat Schwartz who now works for Skype, this SMC phone is a Skype phone which lets you use Skype without a computer. The software is pre-loaded, and once you log on to your account, all your contacts will be loaded. It also comes with a FON wifi router which enables you to share in the FON network and any open wifi network.
Buy it on the Skype website and you should get a good discount.
Broken Promise
Young Oren has written in to ask where is the Woz interview promised by Leo in Episode 150. Leo doesn't remember he promised it. But he DID. Dick and Leo talk about Woz's Nixie watch again, and his cellphone with a Western Electric rotary dial. Leo says they'll get Woz on, in another 150 episodes. Poor Oren.

The Databreaker
Internet Connection Disconnector
Link: Databreaker
In place of the Pathlock which has been discontinued, Dick has found the Databreaker which automatically disconnects your always-on broadband internet connection.
Connect (1) your cable modem/DSL cable to the IN port of the
Databreaker, (2) an ethernet cable from the OUT port to your computer's
ethernet port, (3) your monitor's power cable into the Databreaker, (4)
the Manual Override switch into the Databreaker, and (4) the
Databreaker to a wall power outlet.

When your monitor goes to sleep, the Databreaker senses the low power mode and automatically cuts off the internet connection to your computer. When you need the connection to stay on, the manual override switch disables the Databreaker.
The Miami Boat Show
Dick has just come back from the Big Miami Boat Show. This and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show are the 2 biggest boat shows of the year.
Leo's Dream Boat
Leo is exploring the possibility of getting a boat for himself, although his wife Jennifer will only agree to it if she can always see the coast, or just "pull over". Dick recommends a slow trawler.
Another Gadget Delivery
Another UPS delivery arrives while the show is being recorded. It's from a computer company.
Acer GridVista
Ken Lange from Las Vegas wrote about the GridVista software that came along with his Acer 24" monitor and thought it would be a great accompaniment to Leo's Dell 24" Monitor (Episode 242).
Dick's Gadget Warehouse
Many listeners are envious of Leo over his visit to the Gadget Warehouse (Episode 246). Over 15 years, Leo was about the third person to visit it (and the first one to come out alive). One listener congratulated Dick and Leo for their special effects which made the virtual gadget warehouse sound more real than ever.
Email from To[s]tino
