Dick's Gadget Warehouse
Back in 2000, Targus introduced this portable charger, the Universal AC Adapter PA160U, a similar idea to the Charge4All in Episode 883 this week, only 9 years earlier. It was half an inch thick, and weighed only 7.5 ounces, which in those days was pretty light-weight. It also came with power tips for charging your notebook and other accessories. This model is no longer available, but Targus is still making other newer models.
Edison, Ford and Firestone
Aaron Martina has been listening to the Daily Giz Wiz since Episode 1, and is an avid consumer of Leo's other podcasts. Back in Episode 870, Dick and Leo talked about Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Aaron lives in Fort Myers, Florida, whose claim to fame is having been the winter home of not only Edison and Ford, but also Harvey Firestone (founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company), who were all friends. The 3 houses and their workshops are now museums - precursors to Dick's Gadget Warehouse.

Talk of China's Terracotta Warriors has prompted another letter from Alessandro Abate. The Chinese invented paper currency (and paper itself), gunpowder, noodles and the compass, but among the less well-known of their inventions was the Chia Pet (see Episode 752 for the Chia Obama). The Terracotta Soldiers were actually the Emperor's private collection of Chia Pets, but the Chinese forgot to water them. Terracotta, Alessandro adds, is Italian for "baked earth". It was the ancient Romans' first failed attempts on making pizza. Thankfully they switched to baking dough in time.
The Man Who Loved China ...
... and it's not Leo. Recommended by Alessandro, this book by Simon Winchester is about Joseph Needham, the British scientist who, starting in the 1940's, became fascinated with China and its scientific achievements. It was the Audible Pick of the Week on MacBreak Weekly 135, but Leo has not got round to reading it yet. The Man Who Loved China is available on Audible.

Dick's Gadget Warehouse
A precursor to the Harmony Remote (Episode 82), the Evolve Guide Universal Remote Control was a universal remote, which you could connect to the computer to download the programme guide. It had an LCD dot matrix screen, and a huge number of buttons for controlling the TV, cable-box, VCR etc. The price was pretty steep, about $200, and with the emergence of Tivo, the Evolve Guide didn't take off.
That Little Old Winemaker - Me
From time to time, Leo would call Dick "the little old gadget maker", "the little old gadget meister" or the like. This harks back to the mascot in the ads and commercials for wines from the Italian Swiss Colony, who was called That Little Old Winemaker. Voltaic Generator
Laptop Bag with Solar Charger

Way back in Episode 144, Dick talked about the Voltaic Backpack. Recently at an airport, Dick caught up with a man and asked him if he was carrying a new Voltaic laptop bag. It was, as promised by Voltaic as part of its future plan. It's called the Voltaic Generator. It's got enough solar panels for generating a 15W power supply to charge an internal battery (which takes 5 hours), which in turn charges the laptop. It comes with common adapters for phones, notebooks and other handheld devices, and there is an optional reconfigured MagSafe adapter for MacBooks.
Voltaic does say that not all laptop manufacturers enable charging by external batteries. Most Apple, Dell, Lenovo and Panasonic models work with the Generator, while Sony, Toshiba and Fujitsu laptops are less likely to work. A full refund will be made if the bag does not work with your notebook.

The cigarette lighter in the motor-car is now more useful as a power charger than lighter. The Flashlight-er, apart from being a 3-LED flashlight, acts as an adapter that connects to the cigarette lighter and gives you a USB port for charging your USB devices. There is also a Dual-Function model available which gives you both connections.
Do not confuse the Flashlight-er's website (which is www.theflashlighter.com) with another website www.flashlighter.com. Making a Show out of Thin Air
Dick saw the Japanese Game Show Brain Wall (the North American version of which is called Hole In The Wall) and wondered how anyone could make a game show out of that idea. Why not, if Leo can make a show out of pumping air into his fitness ball? Dick thinks that Leo needs the Duracell Powerpack 450 (Episode 693) which includes an air compressor. Leo remarks that he's got an air mattress in the TWiT Cottage that comes with its own pump, all ready for Dick when he next visits Petaluma.
Crayon Cheques
In Episode 799 Leo joked about writing out cheques in crayon. It turns out that it wasn't so absurd after all. David from Durham, North Carolina, used to deliver pizzas in the 1990's, and one of the styles of cheques you could order from banks in those days had all the blanks printed out as if they had been drawn by a child in crayons.

A common problem Leo finds with camcorders is the quality of the built-in microphones, and that includes his Canon EOS 5D Mark II (Episode 742) which he uses to take HD video. He uses a good quality microphone made by Rϕde Microphones, called the Stereo VideoMic. It has a standard camera shoe-mount for fitting on to camcorders and cameras. It is a stereo X/Y condenser microphone, with a low noise circuitry, 2-step high pass filter, powered by a 9V battery (with a battery indicator), and is connected to the camcorder via a mini-jack. Comes with a windshield for the mic. It may not be as effective as a unidirectional mic as a shotgun mic, but as a super-cardioid mic, it accepts sounds from the front and sides but very little from the back of the microphone. Leo uses it on his 5D Mark II and his Canon VIXIA HV30 (Episode 552) camcorder.
If you already have a good quality XLR connection microphone, Leo recommends the Beachtek DXA-2S Audio Adapter.

Leo forgot he was going to talk about the Kindle 2 but still manages to come up with something cool. It's the Coleman Flashcell Rechargeable Screwdriver. Just a cordless screwdriver, but it's the charging of the battery which is exciting. The charging base uses ultracapacitors (currently an EEStor project) which give the battery a full recharge in 90 seconds, which will last the screwdriver 30 minutes. It's the first and only commercial product available using this technology.
Leo even manages to demonstrate the charging of the screwdriver, and keep it running for half an hour. Just ignore the clock behind Leo.

SeaSucker
Boat Accessory: Vacuum Mounting

Dick was at the Miami Boat Show 2 weeks ago, and he has brought back some marine accessories. The Seasucker is one of them. It's not the marine equivalent of the Purseguard (Episode 406) to secure your anchor, nor a barnacle remover, as Leo guesses. It's a device for mounting your gadgets and other possessions securely to the boat without drilling holes. A SeaSucker is a vacuum cup from which you pump the air out until the red indicator disappears, when you can attach your belongings. It can hold attachments weighing 120 lbs or 210 lbs depending on the size of the SeaSucker, available in 4.5" and 6" models. You can also "daisychain" SeaSuckers together on an aluminium track or on a SeaSucker Bridge to increase the load.

Medis 24/7 Fuel Cell Power Pack

Inside the Medis 24/7 Fuel Cell is a fuel cartridge which, when activated, the chemical energy stored in the liquid fuel is converted into electrical engery. After activating the fuel cell by squeezing the fuel cell box, you first connect the supplied power cable connector to the fuel cell, then connect the cable to the appropriate power tip for your device to start charging. After use, you can send the fuel cell box back to Medis, instructions for which are included in the packaging.
There are different starter kits available. The most basic is the Power Pack, which includes one fuel cell, the power cable connector, and 4 hot tips (mini USB, LG, Palm Treo and Nokia).
