Targus Universal AC Adapter PA160U
Portable Charger
Link: Targus
Back in 2000, Targus introduced this portable charger, the Universal AC Adapter PA160U, a similar idea to the Charge4All in Episode 883 this week, only 9 years earlier. It was half an inch thick, and weighed only 7.5 ounces, which in those days was pretty light-weight. It also came with power tips for charging your notebook and other accessories. This model is no longer available, but Targus is still making other newer models.
Edison, Ford and Firestone
Aaron Martina has been listening to the Daily Giz Wiz since Episode 1, and is an avid consumer of Leo's other podcasts. Back in Episode 870, Dick and Leo talked about Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Aaron lives in Fort Myers, Florida, whose claim to fame is having been the winter home of not only Edison and Ford, but also Harvey Firestone (founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company), who were all friends. The 3 houses and their workshops are now museums - precursors to Dick's Gadget Warehouse.

Link: Charge4All
For other charging mats covered by Dick, see Episode 748 (the Powermat and the Wildcharger Pad).
The Bengal Lancer
When asked what the Charge4All might be, Leo guesses that it's a cavalry bugle. This reminds Dick of his hero Sid Ceasar in the Sid Caesar Show, where he played a Bengal Lancer.
Another Lost Reader
Leo has taken his evangelisation of the E-Book Reader to new heights. Not only has he been spreading word of them, he's positively seeding them around on airplanes. His latest Kindle was the second E-Reader he left behind on a flight.
Another Dead Musician, Another Jingle?
With the recent surmise of Michael Jackson, Leo is wondering if he will join the ranks of the dead Letters Jingle Singers. Calling Dan Lueders ...
Terracotta Chia Pets
Talk of China's Terracotta Warriors has prompted another letter from Alessandro Abate. The Chinese invented paper currency (and paper itself), gunpowder, noodles and the compass, but among the less well-known of their inventions was the Chia Pet (see Episode 752 for the Chia Obama). The Terracotta Soldiers were actually the Emperor's private collection of Chia Pets, but the Chinese forgot to water them. Terracotta, Alessandro adds, is Italian for "baked earth". It was the ancient Romans' first failed attempts on making pizza. Thankfully they switched to baking dough in time.
The Man Who Loved China ...
... and it's not Leo. Recommended by Alessandro, this book by Simon Winchester is about Joseph Needham, the British scientist who, starting in the 1940's, became fascinated with China and its scientific achievements. It was the Audible Pick of the Week on MacBreak Weekly 135, but Leo has not got round to reading it yet. The Man Who Loved China is available on Audible.
Leo's Gallery on China Tour
Leo is still enthusing about his tour of China, and was much impressed by the 8,000 odd Terracotta Warriors, each about 6-foot tall and every soldier is different. Check out his photos on Smugmug or Flickr.

Comedy for a Wedding
Bill Gaines liked Henny Youngman so much that he hired Youngman to perform at his wedding.
A warm welcome back, to Phillip White from Chattanooga, Tennessee, who last wrote in Episode 406. Phillip heard in Episode 798 about the Digivina, the ultimate in retro style, and snapped it up in no time. The CD-to-vinyl press certainly impressed Phillip, who has been converting his huge CD collection to vinyls. Check it out at digi-vina.com, and look out for Digivina Portable.

From time to time, Leo would call Dick "the little old gadget maker", "the little old gadget meister" or the like. This harks back to the mascot in the ads and commercials for wines from the Italian Swiss Colony, who was called That Little Old Winemaker. It so happens that Leo knows the people at Italian Swiss Colony. In the TV commercials, the mascot was played by Austrian-born actor Ludwig Stössel. For a picture of a postcard featuring the actor, click here.
Label Intensive
Dick has a box of label-makers, and has coined the phrase "label intensive". Dick and Leo repeat their complaint about the anonymous power adapters for their gadgets. Dick now uses a silver marker to label the power adapters.
Whatever happened to the Jingle Singers?
Top Jamaican fan Marlon Stewart had to take himself off the Daily Giz Wiz as it became too addictive. He's now back, but is surprised to find that the Jingle Singers are missing. He loves the Festive Letters Jingle, and it so happens that Leo decided to play it, in May.
Blame it on HQ
Leo has decided that he needs to have a headquarters for somebody to blame if anything goes wrong. It needs to be located at a place with a funny name, like Sioux City in Iowa, Lake Rogerene in New Jersey, or Susquehanna in Pennsylvania. But during the break, Leo decided on Pickles Gap, Arkansas.

Solar DIY
You can build your own solar power unit using Voltaic's Solar DIY components.
Seltzer, Seltzer, Seltzer
The Seltzer Sisters in San Francisco still makes deliveries of seltzer in classic 1920's glass bottles, which are collected after use. You can mix your own special beverages using their recipes, including the egg cream.
Paul Minshall's Jingles Singles Podcast
Our jingle writer Paul Minshall now has a podcast of his "singles" on iTunes, called Paulywood's 45. You can listen to his songs and jingles for free. Subscribe to it through iTunes (search for Paul Minshall, or Paulywood's 45), or through his website paulywood.com. For good measure, Leo plays for Dick Paul's Country Jingle for the Daily Giz Wiz.
Julius La Rosa and Arthur Godfrey
Leo jokes that this is the last episode of the Daily Giz Wiz. Dick feels as though he were Julius La Rosa, who was fired on the air by Arthur Godfrey. Watch this famous moment in TV/radio history on YouTube.

Leo even manages to demonstrate the charging of the screwdriver, and keep it running for half an hour. Just ignore the clock behind Leo.
For those interested in how ultracapacitors or supercapacitors work, go to ultracapacitors.org. Steve Gibson also covered this topic in Security Now! Episode 177 (with feedback from listeners in SN! Episode 178). For its possible application in electric cars, see Popular Mechanics.
A Message from the Kindle 2
Al Spalding from Acworth, Georgia refers to the voicemail from the Kindle 2, played on Buzz Out Loud, in anticipation of Leo's review of the new Kindle. A protest against the objection by Authors' Guild to the Kindle's new text-to-speech feature.

Seat Sucker
The SeaSucker would be perfect for attaching Leo to his fitness ball, and he could parade himself too on Butter and Eggs Day. It would be called the Seat Sucker. Dr Mark Sukoenig (eyedocmark) from the Chatroom chips in: If a psychic had a SeaSucker, it would be called a seersucker.
Wizneyland Guest
Leo has had his share of visitors at the TWiT Cottage while recording, and Dick has his first guest in his studio, Bob Butcher, an engineer on Metro North.
TWiT Cottage Plus
TWiT is expanding again, taking up another room upstairs. Dick calls it TWiT Cottage Plus.
Bill's Law
According to Dick's naval architect, if water is gushing into your boat through a one-inch hole, you need to drill a 2-inch hole in order to get the water out. The rule of thumb is to double the size of the hole.
Multi-Colour Sporks
Scott Kingsley (Chatroom handle: ibreakfortwit) loves the Daily Giz Wiz, except for Tuesdays. It's most unflattering when the Tricaster zooms in to find Leo under his desk. He suggests that Dick just give Leo multi-colour sporks to end his misery.
The Energy Detective
Dick and Leo have talked about the power monitor Kill A Watt and Kill A Watt PS before, most recently when a Canadian listener wrote in to say that it was available on loan from his local library in Ajax, Ontario (Epiosode 721). Scott has an alternative, which his library also lends out. It's The Energy Detective (TED) at theenergydetective.com.
A Gold Star for Dick
Dick wants to get a gold star (or whatever colour is available) for his icon in the IRC Chatroom, preferably with a royal crown and a sceptre. Darth Emma will be crowning or knighting Dick as a Mod.

A Boon to Data Entry
Since Taylor D from Arkansas found the Daily Giz Wiz on iTunes, he's been listening to it for 6 months. He's tried out the Gunnar Optiks Computer Glasses (Episode 692), which have come as a great relief for his eyes, when he has to do 8 to 10 hours of data entry in front of the computer every day. No more double vision for Taylor.
