Altec Lansing T612
iPhone-Certified Speakers
Link: Altec Lansing
The T612 from Altec Lansing is a set of stereo speakers (60 Watts RMS) with an iPhone/iPod dock, certifed for use with iPhones, which shields the speakers from radio interference from the GSM phone. Henry Laporte has been using a radio clock as speakers which Jennifer got from Crate and Barrel. Leo thinks that his kid should start learning about proper sound quality. That's when the T612 came in. Henry happens to be in the TWiT Cottage and can attest to the quality of the speakers, in answer to blatantly leading questions from Leo. Totally unsolicited approbation, save for the $20 Leo hands over to Henry.
Leo also took with him to China another set of speakers from Altec Lansing, the inMotion iM4 which fold up neatly for travelling.
Gems from the Garbage Can
In Dick's neck of the woods, Thursday is big-furniture-put-out-day, and there are some great finds to be had. Another member of the Laporte family, Eva, who used to live in Brooklyn, can attest to that as well. Dick is still hoping that the pair of Altec Lansing 604 speakers (Episode 850), which his mother gave away years ago, might yet turn up one day, amidst the heap of unwanted, abandoned furniture.
This Is Why You're Fat
Depite Eva's help with his emails, and her very presence in the studio, Leo is still desperately searching for a letter to read. Toyota Boy (Jayzee) comes to the rescue again, and points to the site This Is Why You're Fat, with user-submitted pictures of high-calorie, high-fat dishes, including in particular, the 30,000 calories sandwich. Leo's answer to the question posed by the website is, he used to work at McDonald's.
Leo on McDonald's
Just before the show starts, Leo has an animated chat with Dick about his first job at McDonald's. Courtesy of odtv.me, watch and listen to Leo's exposé on the shelf life of a hamburger.
Hot Talk Barbeque Spatula
Talking Spatula

From about 10 years ago, the Hot Talk was hot for about 2 seasons. It was a talking barbeque spatula, with a few recorded comments that got played while you flipped that steak.
Preparations for China
Right now, Leo is in China, probably wearing Scott-E-Vest Lightweight Travel Pants or Travel Shorts, and carrying the Tom Bihn Tri-Star stuffed with Packing Cubes.
When Leo gets back from China, he might talk about the Tri-Star and Scottevest pants on TTTT.
WTHII
The gadget featured in the last What The Heck Is It? game is the Lite Bite, made by Nite-Ize, whose other gadget, a fibre optic flashlight, was also a WTHII mystery back in December 2006.
It's Time for 4th July Fireworks Again
Jan Reesman is a loyal listener. She last wrote in Episode 382 about the Great Gildersleeve. She has a blog called dogsandcats101. Leo remembers her well because Jan used to call his radio show about her blog, whose old name had the word "bitches" in it and she had to be edited out. Her favourite story from Dick is the way Dick watches the 4th July fireworks on the Hudson River, which he explains again. The only difference this year is Dick's old analogue portable TV won't work.

The Few, The Proud, the Depressed
Leo's wife Jennifer doesn't like the slogan "The worse your life is, the better we sound". She doesn't understand that the Daily Giz Wiz is made for the few, the proud, the depressed.
For the origin of the slogan, listen to the last few minutes of Episode 391, the letters section.
At Two With Nature
During his summer break at the Gray Eagle Lodge at 6,000 feet altitude, there were no internet access, no cellphone access, no subway, no buses, no Starbucks, and what's more, no oxygen, which gives Leo a headache. There were board games with missing pieces, and crushed ping pong balls. A great holiday then.
Dane in New York
Dane Golden visited Dick in New York and was given a tour of the Mad Office. He also treated Dick and his friend Dennis to lunch which Leo kindly offered to pay with the TWiT credit card (Visa of course), with a cap of $20 for 3.
Sucker City
Mad did a spoof of a Circuit City ad and called it Sucker City. An employee at Circuit City did not like the parody and decided to pull Mad off the shelves at some of the outlets. The PR found out about the bruhaha and wrote an interesting letter of apology to Mad, offering a Powerpoint presentation of at least 300 pages and a Circuit City gift card of $20 towards the purchase of a Nintendo Wii, if Mad could find one. The letter is reproduced on Dick's home page.
For some interesting reactions by people or names who have been spoofed by Mad, see Episode 74 and Episode 426.
Making Noises
Randal Schwartz's story of party lines and modems (Episode 623) has prompted a letter from a New Zealand listener David McLoughlin, who drew our attention to a 56K Modem Emulator at LazyLaces.com. If you miss that familiar dialing tone, you can click "Connect" on that page to listen to it again.

iPhone 3G Launch
At the time of recording, Leo had yet to do his 24-hour iPhone 3G launch coverage. Leo predicts that he will be dragged out of the TWiT Cottage kicking and screaming in a nervous breakdown. He wasn't, but some may well think that he should have been. As Dick says, when he joined the TWiT network, he took Leo out of his shell, but now he's gone out of his mind.
This Way To The Egress
Because of the need for perfect audio and video conditions, all egresses of the TWiT Cottage have to be covered in dark fabrics. That reminds Leo of a quotation of P T Barnham's, "This way to the egress."
Fireworks No More?
After Dick and Leo talked about Dick's eccentric way of watching the 4th of July Fireworks (Episode 605), Mike Gunn (from Episode 315) wrote to make the observation that Dick won't be able to carry on his old way much longer, as portable TVs don't support digital TV, yet. Dick suggests that the Grucci family should start doing water-level fireworks.
Leo's First Job ...
... was at McDonald's. He worked his way up from the cash counter, to milk shakes upstairs, to French Fries, and then to the grill.
Curly Fries and a Medium Coffee
Dick went into Burger King and asked for Curly Fries. No such thing. Leo went into Starbucks and asked for a Medium-size coffee. No such thing. It's Spiral Fries and Americano Grande.

Someone Made A Video
In Episode 606, Dick said someone had made a video with all the jingles back-to-back and a selection of pictures of past gadgets. That someone wrote to Dick, "That someone would be me." Signed InsideDGW.
You can watch the video at the blog post for Episode 600, or follow this link: snipurl.com/600video.
The video is 3 minutes 54 seconds long, although that's not the length of all the jingles and themes combined. Only an extract of the Spork Commercial was used, and the video was made before Dan Lueders's Thursday Theme and Disclaimer were aired.
