Samsung NC20
Netbook
Link: Samsung
These days Leo goes through his netbooks the same way he goes through his netcasts - lots of them. After his Asus Eee PC (Episode 447) and MSI Wind (Episode 762), the latest addition to Leo's line of netbooks is the Samsung NC20, with the following specs:
- VIA Nano ultra low voltage CPU (1.3GHz)
- 12.1-inch, WVGA (1280 x 800) glossy display
- 97% full-size keyboard
- Integrated 1.3MP webcam
- 160GB 5400rpm hard drive
- 1GB DDR2 memory
- Wifi b/g, bluetooth
- 3 USB ports, an SD card slot
- 11.5" x 8.5" x 1.2" and 3.3 lbs
- 6-cell Lithium Ion battery (5900 mAh)
- Windows XP Home
Leo likes the Samsung NC20 (having made quite a number of upgrades), and hulu plays fine on it. For major reviews of the Samsung NC20 on the web, check out the links on TestSeek.
The First Letters Jingle: An Encore
Andrew Rodriguez welcomes Leo home, and wants to remind everyone of the very first Letters Jingle. He is good enough to attach the jingle to his email. Dick and Leo can't remember who was responsible for it.
It's the Finnish Letters Jingle, by Henrich Antonin from Finland. Billed by Dick as the jingle with the "big finish", it was played from Episodes 151 to 160, and superseded by George Wood's Letters Jingle in Episode 166.

From time to time, Leo would call Dick "the little old gadget maker", "the little old gadget meister" or the like. This harks back to the mascot in the ads and commercials for wines from the Italian Swiss Colony, who was called That Little Old Winemaker. It so happens that Leo knows the people at Italian Swiss Colony. In the TV commercials, the mascot was played by Austrian-born actor Ludwig Stössel. For a picture of a postcard featuring the actor, click here.
Label Intensive
Dick has a box of label-makers, and has coined the phrase "label intensive". Dick and Leo repeat their complaint about the anonymous power adapters for their gadgets. Dick now uses a silver marker to label the power adapters.
Whatever happened to the Jingle Singers?
Top Jamaican fan Marlon Stewart had to take himself off the Daily Giz Wiz as it became too addictive. He's now back, but is surprised to find that the Jingle Singers are missing. He loves the Festive Letters Jingle, and it so happens that Leo decided to play it, in May.
Blame it on HQ
Leo has decided that he needs to have a headquarters for somebody to blame if anything goes wrong. It needs to be located at a place with a funny name, like Sioux City in Iowa, Lake Rogerene in New Jersey, or Susquehanna in Pennsylvania. But during the break, Leo decided on Pickles Gap, Arkansas.

NJOY NPRO Starter Kit
Electronic Cigarette Substitute
Link: NJOY
Each cartridge consists of water, propylene glycol, a scent, and nicotine. It gives the flavour of smoking to the smoker but without the smell of tobacco, as the "smoke" that comes out is an odourless mist. One NPRO cartridge is the approximate equivalent of half a pack of cigarettes.
As the cartridge contains nicotine, it is not a smoking-cessation device, but just a cigarette alternative.
A New "Voice" for Dick
Dick has started using the new microphone (Heil PR-40 Studio Microphone) that Leo sent him. "We can't improve the quality, so we improve the sound," says Dick.
Changes at Mad
Sadly, Mad has decided to publish the magazine quarterly, instead of monthly. Circulation and ad revenue are down, and Time Warner has had to let 800 employees go. You can read about the news on Dick's website. When people heard the news, the most frequent inquiry was "What's going to happen to the What The Heck Is It game?" Dick's income is going to drop a bit, but he may start doing the Daily Giz Wiz twice a day, or have lunch with Madoff.
A Leo Jingle
Geoff Smith has done a Leo Jingle (La, la, la, Leo, Laporte), and a "Insert Name Here" Jingle for MacBreak Weekly, which Leo plays on this show.
The Hi Phone
There are scams around selling people the Hi Phone, probably made by Tangerine.
Presidential Ties
President Obama is the first president to have his portrait taken by a digital camera. The EXIF data of the photo shows that it was taken on a Canon EOS 5D-Mark II, on 13th January, the day Leo did his TTTT gadget of the day - the Canon EOS 5D-Mark II (Episode 742). "Does Leo have ties to the President?" asks Nick from Columbus, Ohio. Leo has heard rumours that the new administration may be appointing Dick as the new Gadget Tsar. Dick says they haven't got round to it yet. They've been too busy putting off the Digital TV transition.

ioSafe Solo
Disaster Resistant External Hard Drive
Link: ioSafe
Dick went to CES 2009 early to attend a demo of the new product from ioSafe. The ioSafe Solo is a USB2 external hard drive, but it's no ordinary CompUSA External HDD Enclosure (Episode 67). It has a specially designed and constructed enclosure that is "indestructible", or disaster resistant. It can stay immersed in water up to 10 feet deep for 72 hours, and withstand heat up to 1550° (or about 760°), which will protect the hard drive in case of flooding or fire. Choices of capacity of 500GB, 1TB or 1.5TB. The disaster protection does come at a price - in terms of size and weight. It's about 5" x 7" x 11" and weighs 15 pounds. The price includes 3 years of warranty and a year of $1,000 disaster data recovery.
Ordeal by Fire and Water
The Solo Demo was one of the best CES demos Dick attended. The Solo was thrown into a swimming pool, and then put into a furnace with the temperature rising to 1200°F and up. After the ordeal by water and fire, the hard drive was retrieved from its steaming case, connected to a computer, and the data was still safe.
Ian Johnson from Vancouver discovered th Daily Giz Wiz about 6 months ago, around the time he broke up with his girlfriend of 7 years' standing. He couldn't get enough of the DGW and has now listened to the entire back catalogue. The slogan in the Monday Theme "The worse your life is, the better we sound" particularly resonates with Ian.
Jingle Submissions
Ian Johnson is a musician himself, and he wonders if Dick and Leo receive a lot of theme songs and jingle submissions. He has a few ideas for the Mail Bag and may in due course submit a theme or two.
The First DGW Jingle
Dick asks Leo which was the first DGW jingle. In a rare moment of lucidity, Leo remembers, correctly, that it was Mark Blasco's Opening Theme, which he wrote on a geek cruise. Then the first listener-submitted jingle was Paul Minshall's D-A-I-L-Y Closing Theme (or the gravy jingle). George Wood then arrived on the scene and more recently Dan Lueders. Not bad for someone who can't remember the iCap from the radio show just a few weeks ago.

Kill A Watt PS
Power Strip with Electricity Usage Monitor and Surge Protection
Link: Cable Organizer
The monitor itself can give you information on how much electricity you are using. It can now also check the quality of your power supply by monitoring voltage, line frequency, amperage and leakage. The on/off switch also gives you a soft power up to prevent power spikes. The circuit breaker is adjustable to a choice of 2, 5 10 or 15 Amps. It even includes an EMI filter reducing AC power noise.
Seasonal Letters Jingle
Jared Heffner from Indiana wants more seasonal versions of the Letters Jingle, in addition to the Festive Version. A Spring version with violins and birds, a 4th July version, and a Halloween version. Leo asks George Wood, one of our theme-meisters, to get to work.

Tom Bihn's Western Flyer
Travel Bag For Laptop
Link: Tom Bihn
Leo has the Western Flyer, but recommends the SuperEgo for Dick, who can take an Ego Strip with it. The SuperEgo can carry Dick's laptop with room to double up as an overnight bag. For the ultimate briefcase, try the Empire Builder.
Extras include the Horizontal Brain Cell (an insert for storing your laptop), the Absolute Shoulder Strap (which tucks away neatly inside the bag but turns your bag into a messenger-style bag), and the Freudian Slip (a briefcase organiser).
Dick has been using a Targus bag for his laptop (probably the Targus Flare Backpack in Episode 394), but is now sorely tempted to get a Tom Bihn bag.
Toasting Don Quixote
Karen Toast Conger, who lives aboard a catamaran and travels around the world with her family (Episode 512), has taken up Leo's invitation and sent him a photo of her boat, the Don Quixote. It's a Lagoon 380 catamaran. You can see Toast's boat on her website, and on Flickr too. She and her two young girls sing along to the Letters Jingle.

Themes And Jingles
The Choicest Sounds from DGW
Yesterday, George Wood from Scotland, one of our favourite theme writers, sent me copies of the files for his jingles. It so happens that in today's episode, Episode 515, Leo remarks that when they first started, they had no jingles, and now DGW is happily filled with them. Here's a recap of all the official DGW themes and jingles, in chronological order. A belated celebration of Episode 500.
Opening Theme
Written by Mark Blasco of PodcastThemes
on a geek cruise, who also wrote themes for other podcasts on TWiT,
it opens proceedings every day and sets the whimsical tone for the
Daily Giz Wiz. It was there right from the beginning, in Episode 1, on 20 February 2006.
Also called the Gravy Jingle, with its reference to the "It makes its own gravy" slogan. Created by Paul Minshall from Vancouver, Canada, it was chosen as the Gravy Jingle among other jingle submissions. First incorporated into the end of the podcast in Episode 116, but was first aired and introduced by Leo during the show in Episode 118, on 2 August 2006. For the history of how the Gravy Slogan and Gravy Jingle came about, see this rather verbose blog entry.
Letters Jingle
Created for DGW's Mail Bag by George Wood from Scotland, aka the Jingle Singers. As the show went on, more and more emails came in, and Dick and Leo decided to read a letter in each episode. This original Letters Jingle was first aired in Episode 166 on 9 October 2006. For an audio history of how the idea of a letters jingle came about, see this other blog entry.
Festive Letters Jingle
A special version of the Letters Jingle prepared by George Wood for the Jingle Bells season, but truly a jingle for all seasons. Particularly popular with DGW fans. First aired in Episode 208 on 6 December 2006.
The idea for a Turn-The-Tables-Tuesday first started during Episode 115, and TTTT officially began in Episode 122 on 8 August 2006. The theme for TTTT arrived much later, when George Wood decided to write a theme for our special Tuesday, to sing the praises about Leo's travails in looking under his desk. It first appeard in Episode 307 on 8 May 2007.
Every so often, while Dick and Leo are recording the show, Dick's doorbell will ring and it's usually a courier deilvery of a gadget. Dick will go "to answer the door, for just one more - UPS delivery," while Leo sits there twiddling his thumbs. In Episode 337, this happened again and Leo broke into song about waiting for Dick. Paul Minshall lost little time in coming up with a superior version to Leo's, which was aired on 2 July 2007 in Episode 346.
After that, it took a long while before another opportunity came up for the jingle to be played, in Episode 417 on 9 October 2007. It also took Leo a long time to locate the jiingle on his computer.
Warehouse Friday started right from the show's first Friday, on 24 February 2006 in Episode 5. Despite its popularity, the request for a Warehouse Jingle did not appear until listener Roy McMahon suggested the idea in Episode 366.
"They're geeky and they're goofy. Together they are loopy." Our favourite theme writers George Wood and Paul Minshall could have been writing about themselves. They collaborated to produce a spooky, squeaky theme song fit for the celebrated Warehouse and our favourite day of the week, Warehouse Friday. It was completed just before Episode 400 (see this blog entry), but first aired only in Episode 415 on 5 October 2007, as Dick and Leo had pre-recorded quite a number of shows.
Again, the picture here is taken from David Knighton's virtual Dick's Gadget Warehouse on Second Life.
Karaoke on TTTT
And if you can't get enough of jingles, here's a karaoke version of the TTTT theme, which you can sing to.
Update:
No-Theme Wednesday Theme
In Episode 478, Dick and Leo decided that they would have no theme for Wednesday, and it's going to a Theme-Free Wednesday. Chicago-based Dan Lueders, who much earlier made a gravy jingle submission (which got misplaced), prepared this Wednesday Theme for DGW, sent it over to Dick in January 2008, which got misplaced again. Fortunately, it saw the light of day on 19 March 2008, when Dick and Leo found it again, and played it in Episode 528.
The album art for this theme is adapted from the original artwork by Lori Lebeau-Walsh.

Backup Pal
Cellphone Contacts Backup Device
Link: Backup Pal
What is also being promised is a PC Connectivity Kit which will connect the device to the PC for editing and printing (Windows only). Smartphones (Blackberry, Treo, Pocket PC) are not supported but are again in the works.
A similar product covered by Dick a long time ago is the Cellstik (Episode 27) which has similar functions (and limitations). Dick explains on the show that an adapter/tip he has been waiting for from Cellstik has yet to be made. Whether the Backup Pal will suffer the same fate remains to be seen.
Festive Letters Jingle is Back
Will Cool from Portland, Oregon who on the last occasion was dreaming about an in-sink garbage power shredder (Episode 226), is waiting for the Festive Letters Jingle and asks when the holiday season officially begins. NOW, says Leo - the first Monday of November.
GizWizBiz USB Smart Button
Dick saw this gadget at a trade show which is produced in bulk with your own customised logo. Plug it into a USB port and the LEDs will light up and change colours. Press the button and it will take you directly to Dick's website. Selling for $17.99 plus postage. Check out Dick's video on MySpace.
WTHII October '07
It's the Tiger Taco, for keeping cardboard carton flaps in place and under control. Ideal for unpacking. Available in steel or plastic. Hundreds of entries this time and over a hundred people said it was a taco holder. One said it was Pacman hit by a truck.
NeverLate 7-Day Alarm Clock
Alarm Clock
Link: ThinkGeek American Innovative
The Mode Dial on the top of the clock makes it easy to set the wake-up times. Turn the outer dial to set the day of the week, then turn the inner dial for the wake-up time.
Dick's Alarm Clocks
Dick has an alarming range of alarm clocks in the DeBartolo Manor, 8 or 9, including the NeverLate, a storm warning alarm clock, the Wind Chime Alarm Clock (Episode 336) and his favourite of all, the Westclox Nap Timer (Episode 40).
Jingle Singers
Jan from Austin, Texas, a molecular biologist, listens to DGW whilst doing experiments in the lab. He's finally worked out why the "girls", the Jingle Singers, never sing on time: it's because they're not girls, it's George Wood. For another reason why they are always late, see Episode 401.
Leo insists that they are girls, and come in high heels, short flounce skirts, fishnet stockings and bellboy caps, and that he paid them $1,000 each from last year's ad revenue.

A Letters Jingle that comes on cue
Leo has been blaming the Jingle Singers for being tardy. Randal Schwartz has advised Leo to move the Letters Jingle file from his external drive to an internal hard drive. Now finally, the Jingle Singers come on cue. And Leo still calls himself The Tech Guy.
WWF Mic
Kelly Redwolf Price, and Ron from Houston, have written in about the WWF Mic (Episode 390) and the name conflict between the World Wrestling Federation and the World Wide Fund for Nature. The wrestling group had to change its name to WWE, World Wrestling Entertainment. There are WWE mics out there as well, but not the same as Dick's WWF Mic.
