Wine Train - Live !
Today, Dick and Leo will be on the Wine Train, and Leo might be beaming videos or photos of the train journey with the help of his Verizon MiFi. Check for their Twitter updates (Leo's Twitter; Dick's Twitter).
Giz Wiz Visit
Don't forget, Dick will be at the TWiT Cottage tomorrow (Tuesday 11 August) recording Episode 900. Tomorrow evening there will be a meet-up in San Francisco, at Jillian's Billiards at the Sony Metreon, with Dick, Leo and Dane Golden. It will start at about 6 p.m. Details at Dick's site.
The Proud Father of a Podcaster
Leo is very proud of Abby, who is now hosting a podcast of her own, Abby's Road.
The Writers of Writers
At one stage, the writers' room for the Match Game consisted of Dick and Dick only. But perhaps the most remarkable writers' room was the one for Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, which included eminent writers such as Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Larry Gelbart and Neil Simon.
Weird Al's Parody on CNR
Dick got a rush of emails the day this JibJab video came out. Jeremy Cartee and Ricky Brigante (host of Inside The Magic) were among the first to tell Dick about Weird Al Yankovic's new video parody on Charles Nelson Reilly, called CNR.

For other options, with different functionalities, check out listener Steve Miller's recommendation in Episode 682, the Logitech Squeezebox Boom, or the Sonos System which Leo would love to be able to review.
Family Concerns
Dr Mark Sukoenig has much to write about. Being a model of courtesy and discretion, and a doctor, he asks after Leo's sister Eva (who made a guest appearance in Episode 876) and wonders why she looks significantly older than Leo. Then he asks after Mama Laporte, and is concerned about her oratorical capacity, as she didn't seem to talk much when she appeared on TWiTLive.
Crust and The Ten Commandments
More to the point, Dr Mark is very well connected in the medical field. Hailing from Syracuse, New York, Dr Mark would have been served when he was young by the inventor of the Brannock Device (see his letter in Episode 280). Not only that, he is also a distant cousin of Herman Klotz, a dentist whose name happened to be used by MAD in a satire on Crest, called Crust, for which he was handsomely compensated by having a stack of MAD magazines sent to him. For the cover of the relevant MAD Issue No.43, visit Doug Gilford's Mad Cover Site. Dick remembers that MAD did a visual Ten Commandments, and for "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery", MAD used a picture of a motel, and the motel owner was similarly compensated.
Gotcha!
Dr Mark likes to listen to the Daily Giz Wiz while driving. Just last month, he was doing the same thing, and he laughed so hard that he lost control of the car, the car skidded on an ice slick, flipped over in a snow bank, hit a tree .... and got Leo, but not the street-wise Dick Debartolo. He hasn't heard any report of snow in July, even in Syracuse, and certainly not last July.

Altec Lansing T612
iPhone-Certified Speakers
Link: Altec Lansing
The T612 from Altec Lansing is a set of stereo speakers (60 Watts RMS) with an iPhone/iPod dock, certifed for use with iPhones, which shields the speakers from radio interference from the GSM phone. Henry Laporte has been using a radio clock as speakers which Jennifer got from Crate and Barrel. Leo thinks that his kid should start learning about proper sound quality. That's when the T612 came in. Henry happens to be in the TWiT Cottage and can attest to the quality of the speakers, in answer to blatantly leading questions from Leo. Totally unsolicited approbation, save for the $20 Leo hands over to Henry.
Leo also took with him to China another set of speakers from Altec Lansing, the inMotion iM4 which fold up neatly for travelling.
Gems from the Garbage Can
In Dick's neck of the woods, Thursday is big-furniture-put-out-day, and there are some great finds to be had. Another member of the Laporte family, Eva, who used to live in Brooklyn, can attest to that as well. Dick is still hoping that the pair of Altec Lansing 604 speakers (Episode 850), which his mother gave away years ago, might yet turn up one day, amidst the heap of unwanted, abandoned furniture.
This Is Why You're Fat
Depite Eva's help with his emails, and her very presence in the studio, Leo is still desperately searching for a letter to read. Toyota Boy (Jayzee) comes to the rescue again, and points to the site This Is Why You're Fat, with user-submitted pictures of high-calorie, high-fat dishes, including in particular, the 30,000 calories sandwich. Leo's answer to the question posed by the website is, he used to work at McDonald's.
Leo on McDonald's
Just before the show starts, Leo has an animated chat with Dick about his first job at McDonald's. Courtesy of odtv.me, watch and listen to Leo's exposé on the shelf life of a hamburger.

From the Littlest to the Biggest
Tomorrow on Warehouse Friday, Dick will be talking about another product from Altec Lansing, and it's one of the biggest products they made.
Companion Drug and Endless Disclaimers
Dick and Leo are baffled by some TV ads, including one (called Abilify, thanks to DrMom, the chatroom's resident doctor) which is a companion drug to the anti-depressant drugs you are already taking, and those with endless disclaimers that spill over to the next ad.
New Home Office for TWiT
G' Day from over-the-road truck driver Kevin Cameron-Parks, an Aussie who has lived in the States for 11 years who has a Swedish wife who does not speak English with Leo's Swedish accent. He heard that Leo is looking for a place for the TWiT Home Office, and he is more than happy to offer his humble abode at Gassville, Arkansas to Leo.

Woot and eBay
Dick has been buying T-Shirts from Woot Shirt. Every day they come up with a new T-Shirt. They sell Woot wine as well. Dick is also looking out for eBay's Deal of the Day, and the other day got the Octopus 4-port USB Hub (one of which is a mini-USB).
Anti-Burst Fitness Ball
Leo may have an anti-burst fitness ball (Episode 322), but it's not leak-proof. He's getting replacements for his present one, which has been leaking air the last few days.
Meeting at A T & T
The SensorPlug (Episode 794) reminds Tobias Robinson of a meeting he had in a conference room at AT&T, where the lights kept going off. As soon as they headed off to the light switches, the lights came back by themselves. They finally worked out that the room was equipped with motion-sensitive lights, and for the rest of the meeting, they behaved like the expressive Italians, waving their arms and hands about while talking, to keep the lights on.
The Suggestion for "The Pod"
Dick wants to acknowledge that "The Pod" (Episode 793)was a suggestion from Eric McClintock.

Frankly, My Dear
Dick braved the snow storm in New York to go to his local Barnes and Noble to see a presentation by Robert Osborne and Molly Haskell. Haskell has just written a book called "Frankly, My Dear: Gone With The Wind Revisited", with behind-the-scenes information on the making of the film, including actors and actresses who had been considered for roles in the film, such as Katherine Hepburn and Basil Rathbone.
The Test Of Time
Old movies don't always stand up to the test of time, in terms of visual effects production and acting or filming styles, as Leo found out with Kirk Douglas's The Strange Love of Martha Ives. But not Casablanca, which Dick always enjoys rewatching. Leo is waiting for a blu ray version of The Wizard of Oz, but for now he has to settle for a used DVD Deluxe Version.
New Shows on TWiT
Leo is gearing up for a new science show with Dr Kiki, for which Paul Minshall has made a theme. Meanwhile Sarah Lane and Martin Sargent have been doing This Week In Fun on TWiTLive (video available from odtv.me) which Leo might eventually put on a regular podcast feed.
Martin Sargent was responsible for getting Dick and Leo together. For Dick's account, see Episode 100.
More Respect for the Sea
Dick's story in Episode 773 of how he gained his respect for the sea reminded Peter Penny from Toronto of his own lesson. He was to go on a poker run on a cigarette boat and was warned that the boat was so fast that the wind could turn his eyelids inside out. Yeah, right, he thought, until it really happened to him.
For Dick's previous explanation of a poker run, check back at Episode 626.
iPhone PDF Reader
Peter Penny also wants to ask if Leo has any recommendation for a PDF reader on the iPhone. Leo wonders if Stanza can do it, since it's an ebook reader.

Claudio Quaresma (pronounced, according to Leo, Quasimodo as in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, even though Leo keeps saying quasimoto, which is something else altogether) - who last wrote in Episode 554 from Brazil - congratulates Dick and Leo for breaking another record in Episode 755, making it the longest DGW episode so far, at 33:55. Claudio, who listens to the show while cycling to work, begs for more. More? Sanctuary!

Cell-Mate
Cellphone Hands-free Head Gear
Link: cell-mateus.com
You won't hear about the Cell-Mate on CNet, PC Magazine or CNN. Only on the Daily Giz Wiz.
Alan Ralph from the UK saw this on the Wal-Mart site and thought immediately of Dick and Leo. It's the George Foreman iGrill, an indoor outdoor electric grill complete with an iPod dock and speaker system. It's a day of wacky gadgets.
SpongeBob Eyeball Speakers
Wacky Speakers
Link: Nickelodeon
Another wacky gadget from Dick. The SpongeBob Eyeball Speakers have, as the name suggests, two SpongeBob eyeballs which rock to the rhythm of the music. According to Dick, you might hear some motor noise while playing soft music. Although it calls itself a "dock", there is no connector dock as such for the iPod or other MP3 players, but just a space on which to rest your MP3 player.
These speakers on their own are bizarre enough, but imagine placing them next to the 500XL iPod Earbuds Speakers (Episode 528) and the Eyeclops Bionic Eye (Episode 361). That would be surreal.
Downsizing
The Giz Wiz has decided to downsize his life and get rid of his houseboat. He's just had to repair the damage caused to his boat by a Staten Island Ferry, and is going to donate the houseboat to a marine charity. But he still has his work boat.
For a glimpse of Dick's boat, try Pride and Glory, which is supposed to feature Dick's boat in the background and has finally been released. Watch out for a fibre optic Christmas tree. Revisit Episodes 460 and 461 for the story.
Dick on Humanety
The auction on Humanety for a video chat with Dick has finished. Dick thinks he's raised about $180 for Animal Haven, in addition to the $1,000 at the Animal Haven Charity Dinner (Episode 693).
Another Vote of Thanks for the Match Game Cards
John Hatton from ColdZone.com bought a set of Match Game Cards from Dick last Christmas as a present for his wife. One of the cards was a Dumb Dora question. A piece of history.
There are still some Match Game Cards left from the recently unearthed box. Go to MatchGameQuestions.com to get the details, where you can also see Dick's cheques for the residuals he received for Match Game and from Family Feud. For the full story of these residuals, listen to Episode 117.
Match Game Moments, Live
Dick has confirmed that he will be appearing on TWiTLive to do a show with his memories of Match Game and Gene Rayburn on Saturday 29 November (the day Gene passed away, and Leo's birthday), first mentioned by Dick in Episode 688.

Travelon Toiletry Sheets
Travel Accessories
Link: Travelon
Travelon makes travel accessories, like suitcases, bags, computer cases and even carts. These Toiletry Sheets come in 6 types: hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, body wash and laundry soap, each in packs of 50 sheets. Because they're dry, they're TSA-compliant and can be taken on board a flight.
It also has a lot in common with the Daily Giz Wiz and its gravy. Just Add Water.
Halloween Capital
Halloween is big in Petaluma, especially in D Street. They even dress up the chickens! And when you're tired of costumes, you can see some great bands at the Phoenix Theater and McNear's Mystic Theatre (which must be the only theatre in the States with a British spelling), which Kim and Robin from Wild Planet visited recently.
New Business Opportunities
TSA has created so many new business opportunities: Ziplock bags, TSA travel locks (Episode 38), laptop cases (like the Brenthaven in Episode 674), and now these toiletry sheets.
Security was tested at various airports recently, with the help of security expert Bruce Schneier. TSA's protective measures are no more than a "security theater", according to the article "The Things He Carried" in the Atlantic Magazine.
Little Golden Hood on Audible
Join Audible - and get Little Golden Hood narrated by Leo (which is a free download anyway), or Paula Poundstone's "There's Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say". Dick's favourite quote from her is "I was such a lonely child that I created 2 imaginary friends, and they would play only with each other."
The Humanety
Geek celebrities including Veronica Belmont, Geoff Smith, Felicia Day, Gary Vaynerchuk and Patrick Norton are taking part in a project by humanety.com, offering a half-hour Skype video chat on auction to the successful bidder. The money will go to the charity named by the celebrity. Dick is taking part and his charity is going to be his own favourite, the Animal Haven, a no-kill shelter. Dick's auction starts today, 30 October 2008. "Humanety, we're all in this together."
Ballooning Inventory
Earl of Southfield, Michigan and proud member of the TWiT Army has among others 2 copies of Good Days and Mad (hardcover and paperback), a GizWizBiz Inka Pen, a Plantronics 650 headset, 3 Open-X's, a Flip Ultra. No Titanium Spork yet but may soon be added to his ballooning inventory. Purveyors of these gadgets should be begging for sponsorship of DGW. He's even bought items mentioned on TTTT. That should be proof enough.
Earl has been listening since Episode 1, and a long-time fan of the Screen Savers from the Kate and Leo days (not the Titanic pair, but Kate Botello and Leo Laporte).
