Kodak APS Cameras

Dick's Gadget Warehouse
Kodak and other camera companies joined forces in 1991 to develop the Advanced Photo System (APS), which was introduced at PMA in Las Vegas in 1996. It was intended as an alternative to or replacement of the conventional 135 film format. APS film was 24mm wide, compared to 35mm of the 135 format, and the surface area was only 56% of 135 film. It offered 3 aspect ratios - C type (Classic, conventional 3:2 aspect ratio), H type (HDTV, 16:9), and P type (Panoramic, 3:1). Consumers could choose an aspect ratio for individual films on the same cartridge. It also offered Magnetic Information Exchange which could record exposure information, date and time and other personalised information on a magnetic coating, which could be printed on to the backs of photographs.

Polaroid at CES 2009
Speaking of old-timers, Polaroid announced a digital camera at CES, the Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera. It's a camera and a PoGo Printer (Episode 683) in one. Little is known about the specs of the camera itself (apart from the PoGo printer capability). It seems Polaroid is still hanging on to the idea of instant prints.
Getting Smug
Steve Miller thanks Dick and Leo (especially Leo) for introducing him to SmugMug to which he has moved from Flickr. Now he is putting his old pictures and slides on to SmugMug.
All Things Obama
Mad has just had its 3rd Obama cover out, while the previous two are selling on eBay. Leo has been invited to the inauguration ceremony for his campaign contribution, along with the rest of the public, and has been invited to buy all the official Obama merchandise.

If you need a bit of reassurance and affirmation in your life, the Yes Man talking doll would be perfect for you. Ask the Yes Man a question, and it would give you one of 8 affirmative, back-patting answers. You could also record your own answers. It also appeared on the Disney movie "My Favorite Martian". The Yes Man was from about 15 years ago, and the company Rau Creations is still in business.
It certainly sounds better than Squawkers McCaw (Episode 413), but it can't beat Real Talkin' Bubba (Episode 246).
Multiplying Rabbits
Karl from Phoenix, Arizona wants to know if Dick has in the Gadget Warehouse the Rabbit Video Multiplier (made by Gemini Industries), which was a VCR receiver-transmitter, that allowed you to watch a video in any room in the house from one VCR . Karl's version was a wired one. Dick once had the wireless version. Mad's current issue has a spoof comic strip called Calvin and Jobs (being Steve Jobs), based on the much-loved Calvin and Hobbes. Someone has scanned it and posted it on Flickr. Dick was annoyed that no credit was given to the original artists, and he meant Mad writer Jacob Lambert and artist Gary Hallgren, not the original original artist Bill Watterson.

Comes in silver or ocean blue.

Sony SRF-X90 Monocular Sports Radio

From 1994, Sony made this SRF-X90 Monocular Sports Radio. It was a 8x magnification monocular made for live sports viewing, with an AM/FM stereo radio. The idea was you could watch the sports event while listening to radio commentary through the earphones, complete with AVLS (automatic volume limiter system). Water-resistant. Worked on one AA battery.

HYmini
Hand-held Windmill Generator/Portable Charger

The HYmini is not a fan, but a windmill which converts wind power into electrical engery and stores it in the internal rechargeable battery. The wind has to be at least 9 mph. When the wind is fast enough, a green LED lights up to indicate that electrical energy is being generated. You can also charge the battery using conventional AC power (adaptor included), or using the computer via USB.
You can also charge the battery via USB by buying a solar panel using solar energy, called the miniSOLAR. There is also a bicycle attachment to harness the wind power, and an arm-band for people who jog.
You can use the HYmini to charge your 5V portable devices. It also doubles up as a flashlight.

Turn-The-Tables-Tuesday
In the first episode of TTTT after Leo's Tasmanian trip, Leo talks about a gadget he took to Tasmania and used a lot (or will take and use). It's the Lowepro Slingshot 200AW. Lowepro specialises in camera bags and other photography-related accessories.
The Slingshot series gives you backpacks with a single shoulder strap, called the sling strap, ergonomically designed to evenly distribute the load over your body. It has a nice camera compartment large enough to fit your DSLR and its mounted lens, with a built-in micro-fibre cloth to protect the camera's LCD screen; storage spaces for additonal lenses and flashes; a memory card pouch; an all-weather cover which you can slip out from within the bag to protect the bag from rain, dust and other inclement conditions, and other compartments and attachment loops for further storage.
It's called the Slingshot because you can swing, or sling, the bag from your back to the front easily, giving you convenient access to the contents of the bag without having to unload the bag from your shoulder. The largest model is the Slingshot 300AW, with an extra padded waist belt to distribute the weight on to your hips. The 200AW and 100AW are smaller sizes, which have a "stability strap" for added stability.

Another MP3 player from SanDisk, the Sansa Connect. 2.2 " colour screen. 4GB capacity, with a microSD card slot for expansion. The Sansa Connect now has wifi which can join any open network. No built-in voice recorder or FM tuner, but SanDisk has teamed up with Yahoo Music so you can download music directly to it with one of the subscription packages from Yahoo. You can also browse to Flickr to view photos.
