All About Egg Cream
Jim Levine, a Brooklyn tour guide who has written a few times before, and helped tells us all about the egg cream which Leo mentioned back in Episode 813. Jim says that the most believed story is that the egg cream was invented at a luncheon in Brooklyn. The original egg cream did contain eggs, but at the turn of the century when people in poor sections of the city could not afford to have egg in a drink, someone came up with the drink we now know. Authenticity requires spraying off the back of a spoon and Fox's Syrup, as per the Seltzer Sisters instructions. Fox's also has a recipe for the "original" Brooklyn Egg Cream.

Seal Shield, Kung Hei Fat Choy, and the Future of TWiT
Alfred Chan from InsideDGW watched Amber MacArthur on commandN Episode 164, who talked about the Seal Shield dishwasher-safe keyboards from CES, which he thinks Dick and Leo should try. Try they did in yesterday's Episode 756. He also says "Kung Hei Fat Choy" for Chinese New Year. "The Year of the Ox, which is suitable, coz we're full of bull," muses Leo. Alfred has photoshopped the Obama "Future of America" button to make it a "Future of TWiT" button, with the TWiT Cottage in the background. You can see it in the blog post for Episode 747, or currently on Dick's website. There's also a Chinese New Year picture of Dick and Leo, also on Dick's website at the moment. [The Chinese characters on the picture mean something like "Always with a smile on your lips".]
Crowning Glory
Before the show started, Leo showed Dick a gift from Jennifer Laporte. Leo shared with us his moment of crowning glory on TWiTLive.

NJOY NPRO Starter Kit
Electronic Cigarette Substitute
Link: NJOY
Each cartridge consists of water, propylene glycol, a scent, and nicotine. It gives the flavour of smoking to the smoker but without the smell of tobacco, as the "smoke" that comes out is an odourless mist. One NPRO cartridge is the approximate equivalent of half a pack of cigarettes.
As the cartridge contains nicotine, it is not a smoking-cessation device, but just a cigarette alternative.
A New "Voice" for Dick
Dick has started using the new microphone (Heil PR-40 Studio Microphone) that Leo sent him. "We can't improve the quality, so we improve the sound," says Dick.
Changes at Mad
Sadly, Mad has decided to publish the magazine quarterly, instead of monthly. Circulation and ad revenue are down, and Time Warner has had to let 800 employees go. You can read about the news on Dick's website. When people heard the news, the most frequent inquiry was "What's going to happen to the What The Heck Is It game?" Dick's income is going to drop a bit, but he may start doing the Daily Giz Wiz twice a day, or have lunch with Madoff.
A Leo Jingle
Geoff Smith has done a Leo Jingle (La, la, la, Leo, Laporte), and a "Insert Name Here" Jingle for MacBreak Weekly, which Leo plays on this show.
The Hi Phone
There are scams around selling people the Hi Phone, probably made by Tangerine.
Presidential Ties
President Obama is the first president to have his portrait taken by a digital camera. The EXIF data of the photo shows that it was taken on a Canon EOS 5D-Mark II, on 13th January, the day Leo did his TTTT gadget of the day - the Canon EOS 5D-Mark II (Episode 742). "Does Leo have ties to the President?" asks Nick from Columbus, Ohio. Leo has heard rumours that the new administration may be appointing Dick as the new Gadget Tsar. Dick says they haven't got round to it yet. They've been too busy putting off the Digital TV transition.

iCap MP3 Player
Wearable MP3 Player
Link: iCap MP3
The MP3 player comes with 1GB storage, a microSD card slot for expansion, FM tuner, and built-in speakers (with surround sound). The idea is you don't need to listen to it through the earphones, which may save your life in certin circumstances. It is detachable and can be used as a stand-alone player too, and you can also listen to it with your earphones (which are also included). It has a buillt-in microphone for voice recording. The rechargeable Lithium polymer battery is replaceable, and the player supports MP3 and WMA (including Windows Media DRM-9 and DRM-10 files). The stand-alone player weighs about 2.65 ounces.
Dick thinks that a combination of the iCap, the Cell-Mate (Episode 744) and the nPower PEG (Episode 748) from yesterday would look great, if you could survive the dorkdom. Dick isn't going to walk down the streets of New York "with his head playing".
A Political Scientist at TWiT
Leo was earlier broadcasting the feed of Barack Obama's Inauguration when he discovered that Dane Golden, a major in policital science, knew who all the politicians were. Little did Leo know that Dane was just bluffing him.
The Letters C, H and P
Stefan from Sweden and Jeremy on the TWiT Army write in to explain the letters C, H, and P for APS film's different aspect ratios (Episode 745). They also point out that you could decide which aspect ratio you wanted, when you had the Advantix rolls of film developed into prints.
A Bout of Amnesia
At the beginning of this recording session, Dick and Leo thought that they had already recorded Episode 749, and so started with Episode 750, a Gadget Warehouse Friday show. A little bird tipped off Dane Golden who told Leo about the missing Episode 749. Dick then realised that he thought he had done it because he had earlier talked about the iCap on Leo's radio show - which drew a complete blank from Leo.

AirCurve
Acoustic Amplifier for iPhones
Link: Griffin Technology
Griffin makes a good number of iPod and iPhone accessories. Their latest offering is the AirCurve. It is a clear polycarbonate dock for the iPhone EDGE or 3G. The sound waves from the speakers at the base of the iPhone are guided through the coiled waveguide "horn" inside the box which are then amplified by aobut 10 decibels and projected out to the room. Like the Cell-Mate (Episode 744), there are no batteries, no pairing or charging necessary, no electrical or electronic circuitry involved, but a lot of technology and it is just a tad more elegant. Griffin describes it as an acoustic amplifier.
At
the base of the AirCurve is a small slot for the dock cable to pass
through, so you can charge your iPhone or keep it running from your
power source.
As America reaches Inauguration Day for their 44th President, the Daily Giz Wiz has come to another milestone of its own. With 747 episodes under its belt, DGW has reached jumbo proportions. Leo plays a video on YouTube of a 747 flying overhead to celebrate, while I have made a mock Daily Giz Wiz Button, a parody of the Obama "Future of America" Button which is available at PoliticalShopping.com.
To Squeeze or Not To Squeeze
Michael Lurch heard the Logitech SqueezeBox Boom being mentioned by Steve Miller in Episode 735, which is a favourite of his for listening to internet radio. Although he likes the CCrane Wifi Radio (Episode 712), the advantage of the SqueezeBox is that when you have two or more of them in the house, you can synchronise the music on all the SqueezeBoxes so that you can listen to the same music or radio as you move from room to room. Leo is going to get internet radio for Mama Laporte, and is torn between the SqueezeBox and the CCrane Wifi Radio.
For a picture of the SqueezeBox Boom, see Episode 682.
The TWiT Wiki
The TWiT Wiki has been up for more than a week now, which uses the same software as Wikipedia. There are Wiki pages for the Daily Giz Wiz, list of episodes and shownotes. Check out the DGW Wiki pages. You can also create an account for editing those pages.

It's All Water
Dick and Leo muse about our lack of economic wisdom by paying more for less in the form of diet soda and bottled water from the public water supply.
Netcasts You Love ...
Kevin Selle, meteorologist and podcaster of WeatherBrains from Dallas, Texas, has his 4th letter read (the most recent in Episode 601, when he wrote about waiting to be called for jury service while listening to the UroClub Episode 598). He wonders who are the voices in the beginning of all of TWiT's netcasts. It's the announcer Jim Cutler saying "Netcasts you love ... ," Leo's neighbour Laura Sunday saying "from people you trust ... ," and Leo saying "This is TWiT."
For a special version by Jim Cutler of the Netcasts You Love intro, see Episode 322.
A Merry-Go-Round
Jim Cutler also does a podcast, Serving Donuts. Kevin Selle has just written in to DGW, Leo has just appeared on his latest WeatherBrains podcast, and Jim Cutler's latest episode fetaures a TV weatherman.
Leo's Hospitality
Leo is still feeling bad about not having taken good care of Dick on his last visit to Petaluma, when Dick and his friend Dennis had to go off to see a movie on their own, in contrast to what Dick had arranged for Leo and Dane Golden when they visited New York. Leo hopes for a second chance.

Kodak APS Cameras
Film Photography
The film cartridges manufactured by Kodak were marketed as Advantix Film. In January 2004, Kodak announced that it would stop selling APS cameras.
Polaroid at CES 2009
Speaking of old-timers, Polaroid announced a digital camera at CES, the Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera. It's a camera and a PoGo Printer (Episode 683) in one. Little is known about the specs of the camera itself (apart from the PoGo printer capability). It seems Polaroid is still hanging on to the idea of instant prints.
Getting Smug
Steve Miller thanks Dick and Leo (especially Leo) for introducing him to SmugMug to which he has moved from Flickr. Now he is putting his old pictures and slides on to SmugMug.
All Things Obama
Mad has just had its 3rd Obama cover out, while the previous two are selling on eBay. Leo has been invited to the inauguration ceremony for his campaign contribution, along with the rest of the public, and has been invited to buy all the official Obama merchandise.

Surviving CES and MacWorld
Dick survived a less crowded but still very busy CES, and Leo fooled them again with his keynote at MacWorld Expo.
Lose It!
Kathleen sends her best wishes to Dick for his downsizing of the Gadget Warehouse, and for Leo's downsizing, she recommends an iPhone app called Lose It. It uses the same database for creating nutrition labels for food packaging. Dick doesn't need it, as he exercises for 20 minutes a day, walks a lot and goes to the gym.

The Secret to Comedy
Foot, thigh and chicken stock lead Leo to ask Dick what the secret to comedy is. A common ingredient is the surprise element, the unexpected.
Leo and Henry in Mad
Both Leo and Henry Laporte have been featured in Mad's game show parodies. Check back at Episode 61 for Leo's appearance in Mad, and Episode 427 for Henry's.
Filming Game Shows
Jonathan Wander from Monroeville, PA, loves Dick's inside stories, like the one about Jack Benny, (e.g. in Episode 709). Dick has mentioned before that the Match Game was recorded several shows a day. Jonathan was 11 when he was in New York in the 70's and got permission from his parents to go and watch the filming of the Sale of the Century hosted by Joe Garagiola, with strict instructions to be back at the hotel in an hour. What they thought was an hour's filming turned out to be an all-day affair, which left his parents panicking about where he had gone.
Lost in France
Henry was allowed to go off on his own in France and he got himself lost both in Rennes and in Paris. Listen to how he got back to the hotels.

Yashica KC600/Kyocera DR350
Early Digital Camera
Link: Business Wire on FindArticles.com
DGW fan Pablo recently (in Episode 722) heard about Dick's first digital camera (the Casio QV-10, Episode 15) and wanted to donate the Yashica KC600 to the Gadget Warehouse. He got it for $300 but had to pay $150 for a 6MB CF card.
CES Reports on Stickam
Dick intends to talk about CES on Stickam from his hotel room in Vegas. Follow him on Twitter and TWiT Army to get the details.
Apple Quicktake
Three years before the Yashica KC600 was the Apple QuickTake 100, same resolution, 1MB storage for eight 24-bit photos, cost $750.
Dick and Leo surmise that at this CES, they will see 64GB USB sticks.
Leo asks Dick, if he could choose any time to have been born in, what time would he choose. 8.30 pm, says Dick. Leo would like to be born as late as possible, because he wants to see what the future holds. Dick wants to have been born in 1900, but with all the gadgets he now has.
Radio Leo
Jeff Royal from Braunfels, Texas (who last wrote in Episode 563) heard the request by a listener for a single weekly download of DGW (Episode 730), and thinks that there should be a single weekly download of all of Leo's podcasts. Not quite, but Leo already has something like that, an RSS feed of all of Leo's podcasts, all under one roof, called Radio Leo.
